RESEARCH INTERESTS Speech perception by hearing-impaired listeners, especially cochlear implant users; perception of talker-specific properties of speech by cochlear implant users; psychoacoustic abilities of cochlear implant users and of persons with unilateral hearing loss.

Dr. Uchanski’s general research interest is the perception of speech and non-speech by listeners with normal and impaired hearing. She is particularly interested in listeners with impaired hearing who use cochlear implants. Her current research projects include 1) a study of the ability of cochlear implant users to perceive emotion in speech and to discriminate amongst different talkers, and 2) a comparison of complex-pitch perception abilities between congenitally-deaf children who received a cochlear implant at a young age (< 18 months old) and post-lingually deafened adults who received a cochlear implant as adults, and 3) a study of the perception of spectrally- and temporally-complex non-speech stimuli by listeners with unilateral hearing loss.
